Andrew Tate has been indicted in Romania on new charges involving allegations of having sex with a minor, human trafficking, and money laundering.
The 39-year-old influencer was charged alongside his brother, Tristan Tate, as the pair remain in federal detention in Florida. They both face extradition proceedings to the United Kingdom over the alleged crimes, and Tristan has been charged with complicity in connection with the investigation.
Tate has also been accused of recruiting a 15-year-old girl and sexually exploiting her in the UK and Romania. Prosecutors allege that he forced the girl to create sexually explicit material, while Tristan Tate allegedly managed the girl’s video chat accounts and monitored her activities. Prosecutors further allege that he “resorted to acts of physical aggression” against the victim.
The brothers are accused of making over $1.25 million in their criminal activity. Additionally, Tate is accused of having sex with another 15-year-old girl in Romania in 2020 and 2021.
Attorney Eugen Constantin Vidineac has said that the pair “continue to reject the allegations against them.”
“Today’s decision by DIICOT does not determine guilt and it should not be presented as though it does. It represents the prosecution’s latest attempt to bring this case before a court following the failure of its previous indictment to proceed to trial,” he said, according to the New York Post. “The history of these proceedings matters. The previous indictment was subjected to judicial scrutiny and the court identified significant irregularities which prevented the case from moving forward to trial."
“DIICOT has now chosen to file a new indictment. We will examine every aspect of it with the same level of scrutiny and we will challenge any evidential, procedural or legal deficiencies through the appropriate judicial process,” the attorney added.
The attorney has also said that the brothers are concerned that their continued incarceration in the US could result in them being found guilty in Romania. Tate expressed concerns that he could face a life sentence in Romania while being detained in the US, and Tristan noted he does not have the ability to prove innocence due to incarceration.
“I need to clear my name,” Tristan said. “I need to take part in these proceedings, I can’t do that from the secure housing unit.”
