PAMELA GARFIELD-JAEGER: Prop 50 was yet another successful Newsom power grab

Californians voted to pass Prop 50. A yes vote for Prop 50 is a vote for California Republican voices to be silenced. It will temporarily replace the state’s current congressional district maps, which were drawn by the California Citizens’ Redistricting Commission, and replace them with new maps drawn by the Democratic-led state legislature, long before the allotted ten-year time frame dictated by California’s constitution.

Proposition 50 was initiated in response to recent Texas redistricting. In August, Newsom wrote, in a letter to Donald Trump about Texas' redistricting plans, “This attempt to rig congressional maps to hold onto power before a single vote is cast in the 2026 election is an affront to American Democracy.” Newsom claims to believe in democracy so strongly. Yet, he has now decided to override the California Constitution and rewrite the California maps with the explicit goal of giving Democrats a significant advantage in Congress.

The tag line of Prop 50’s campaign was “Stop the Republican Power Grab.” I find it ironic that the man who held onto emergency powers for almost three years in order to suspend hundreds of laws and write at least 58 executive orders without a single vote has once again accused his Republican opponents of destroying democracy with power grabs.

Currently, if California’s Congress represented its people, it would reflect the percentage of Republicans and Democrats equally, but it does not. Even as the districting stands today, only nine out of 52 congressmen are Republican, which is 17%. However, approximately 25% of the voting population is Republican, which is an eight percentage point difference. Now that Newsom has made his intentions to silence his opponents clear, the number of Republican representatives will likely be down by five after the passing of Prop 50. That leaves less than 10% of California’s congressional representation, even though Trump won 38% of the state in 2024.

Plus, let’s not ignore the fact that voters were misled about how Prop 50 will work. In a recent interview, Gavin Newsom said that the redistricting maps were included on the ballots for voter transparency. However, Republican California Representative Kevin Kiley showed us on X that there are no maps on the ballots. There was a proposed district map in the voter guide; however, these maps are drafts only and could easily be changed. Gavin Newsom did what he does best: lie.

We know that the maps will be drawn to serve the needs of Gavin Newsom and his political party, rather than representing the voices of the people in their region. The overwhelming majority of Californians say that they prefer a neutral entity to draw these maps. In fact, according to a Public Policy Institute of California survey, 72% said that it has been “mostly a good thing” that independent citizens draw congressional districts. Unfortunately, now that Proposition 50 has passed, the district lines will no longer be drawn by the Citizens Redistricting Commission and will be heavily partisan, favoring the Democrats.

Finally, we shouldn’t forget about how the Democrats have welcomed millions of illegal immigrants and what this means for elections. Elon Musk laid out exactly how California Democrats are rigging elections through illegal immigration and census apportionment on a recent appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast. Musk stated, “Prop 50 is the key. It allows the legislature to temporarily redraw congressional maps if other states engage in gerrymandering. But combined with importing illegals to inflate the census count by 2030, California locks in more House seats and electoral votes. It’s a one-two punch: flood the state, count everyone, then redraw the lines. That’s how you rig the game for a generation.”

Musk is right. Prop 50 is the power grab of the decade, and it is being done by the Democrats, explicitly to disenfranchise Republican voters.
