Authorities said Jaret Roberto “H” was captured Friday at a rehabilitation center in Reynosa, the same border city where the killing occurred. Two rifles, ammunition, and drugs were seized during the operation, the FGR reported.
The arrest comes in connection with Monday’s murder of Ernesto Cuitláhuac Vázquez Reyna, the FGR’s state delegate in Tamaulipas. Investigators said evidence recovered from the suspect’s cellphone linked him directly to the killing and identified him as a member of “Los Metros,” a faction of the Gulf Cartel, says Mexico News Daily.
The group is described by officials as one of the region’s main fuel trafficking organizations.
The attack took place on Reynosa’s Miguel Hidalgo Boulevard, where assailants hurled a grenade at Vázquez’s black Cadillac SUV. The blast set the vehicle on fire, after which the prosecutor was pulled from it and shot dead.
Officials said they were able to identify and track a vehicle used in the assault, leading them to the suspect. Jaret Roberto “H” was also wanted on a separate arrest warrant.
The FGR said the investigation is ongoing and other individuals involved in the attack are still being sought.
