NICOLE RUSSELL: Was Biden ever president, or just the autopen?

President Joe Biden has not been in office for over half a year already, but his legacy continues to crumble, exposing the Democratic Party’s deceit and explaining their ongoing disarray.

Several of President Joe Biden’s aides have taken the Fifth Amendment while being grilled in front of House Oversight Committee members this week, avoiding questions about his controversial use of the autopen to sign thousands of signatures for clemencies and Biden’s now-obvious cognitive decline.

Biden’s use of an autopen is troubling, along with the number and seriousness of the clemencies he has signed.

“There is now a pattern of key Biden confidants seeking to shield themselves from criminal liability for this potential conspiracy,” House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) declared after Biden’s deputy chief of staff Annie Tomasini invoked the Fifth Amendment and refused to answer questions about Biden’s health while in office.

Comer is right to suggest a questionable pattern among Democrats at work.

According to the Justice Department, Biden granted 4,245 pardons and clemencies in his four-year term, the most of any president, including Trump.

Biden comes to his defense, but it’s confusing, too. In a phone call with the New York Times, Biden said both that the reason the autopen was used was because of the volume of clemency requests the administration was dealing with and that he “made every decision” about clemency on his own.

Biden means that he approved each name, but used the autopen to sign the clemencies, as there were many. Yet the Times story also says that Biden “did not individually approve each name for the categorical pardons that applied to large numbers of people.” This aligns more with what we learned when the volume of clemencies was initially reported.

I don’t have a genuine concern with politicians using an autopen. It’s common for busy people to use digital signatures, but it seems that members of Congress — or presidents, for that matter — should be careful not to use them when signing vital legal documents.

Biden’s recent interview and multiple staff members pleading the Fifth Amendment cast even more doubt on what the Biden administration knew about his health.

The real issue with Biden’s overuse of the autopen, coupled with what we now know about his significant cognitive decline, is that it raises suspicions about whether he was truly cognizant of the decisions he made as Commander-in-Chief.

Autopen or not, Biden preemptively pardoned people with significant power and influence, including his son, Hunter Biden, and Anthony Fauci, among others. I’d love to see an entire hearing focused on Fauci’s preemptive pardon alone, considering how his influence during the COVID pandemic led to social distancing measures, schools being shuttered, and businesses being closed. These things destroyed many people’s livelihoods.

Conservatives like Comer and Attorney General Pam Bondi are right to continue pressing on the use of an autopen and to ask aides about Biden’s decline, even if they continue to invoke their Fifth Amendment right. But they should remain focused on the larger picture.

Biden suffered a severe cognitive decline in the last year, possibly more, while in office. Questions about his autopen use, staff refusals to cooperate, and the preemptive pardons are all good and point to even bigger questions about the Biden administration and the Democratic Party. Were they engaged in serious deceit, manipulation, and gaslighting to cover up Biden’s decline? It sure seems like they were.

Even though the Biden administration is now behind us, and President Donald Trump is painting a brighter future now, conservatives must continue to expose the lies and deceit the Democratic Party engaged in then. It’s an indicator of the party’s health, which is dismal at best. It also explains why, even eight months after the election, the Democratic Party remains in shambles. Their leader was too.
