British conservative activist Tommy Robinson's team has confirmed through a post on X that he will stay in solitary confinement for the rest of his sentence, following a court decision that rejected his appeal to change the conditions of his imprisonment.
“As expected, the corrupt judiciary has just ruled that Tommy Robinson will remain in solitary confinement for his full sentence for a civil offence," Robinson’s account posted. "We'll reiterate, if Tommy had committed a criminal offence, he would have been released months ago!”
Robinson had asked the High Court to review his jail conditions at HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes. He claimed that being isolated from other inmates was harming his mental health and violating his human rights, reports the BBC.
Justice Chamberlain disagreed with Robinson’s claims, stating that there was no proof the prison was trying to “break” him. The court heard that Robinson was being kept in segregation because of serious threats made against his life by other prisoners.
One prisoner serving a life sentence allegedly planned to kill Robinson, while two others reportedly wanted to attack him to earn "kudos and notoriety." Because of these threats, prison officials decided to isolate him for safety, reports The Guardian.
The judge also ruled that Robinson’s claims of degrading treatment didn’t meet the legal standard required to take further action.
Robinson was sentenced to 18 months in prison in October after breaking a court order by repeating false claims about a Syrian refugee.
He was first held at HMP Belmarsh in southeast London but later moved to Woodhill. The transfer happened after Belmarsh received a high number of abusive and racist emails, including threats to the prison’s governor, who is a black woman.
Since November 1, Robinson has been in a closed wing at Woodhill. He is not allowed to mix with other prisoners but has daily contact with officers and staff. He is expected to be released on July 25.
