On Thursday, the controversial climate activist group Just Stop Oil announced that it would no longer organize disruptive direct actions because the UK government had accepted its initial climate demands. Instead, the group is developing a new strategy centered on battling climate change in the courts. This comes after more than 3,300 of its activists were arrested during public demonstrations since the organization's inception three years ago, resulting in 180 prison sentences.

The climate group, known for its disruptive tactics, like vandalizing historic art pieces, blocking oil terminals, and obstructing roadways, said there will be one final protest that is scheduled for April 26, 2025, in Parliament Square, Euro News reported.

"Just Stop Oil's initial demand to end new oil and gas is now government policy, making us one of the most successful civil resistance campaigns in recent history," Just Stop Oil activist Hannah Hunt said in a speech announcing the organization's shift. "We've kept over 4.4 billion barrels of oil in the ground, and the courts have ruled new oil and gas licenses unlawful."

Earlier this month, UK Energy Security and Net Zero Security Secretary Ed Miliband announced that the government would prohibit all new oil and gas licenses in the United Kingdom, according to the paper, which was one of the climate group's demands.

Just Stop Oil lauded its resistance efforts in a statement, saying, "We have exposed the corruption at the heart of our legal system, which protects those causing death and destruction while prosecuting those seeking to minimize harm. Just Stop Oil will continue to tell the truth in the courts, speak out for our political prisoners, and call out the UK's oppressive anti-protest laws."

The organization explained where its activism will be headed next. "Governments everywhere are retreating from doing what is needed to protect us from the consequences of unchecked fossil fuel burning," the statement continued. "We have been betrayed by a morally bankrupt political class."

"We are creating a new strategy a new strategy, to face this reality and to carry our responsibilities at this time. Nothing short of a revolution is going to protect is from the coming storms," the group said.
