Trump agrees confirmed report that China spies on the US after imagery linked to an Iranian attack on a military base in Jordan killed 3 US troops in July. In reply to a news reporter’s question aboard Air Force One on Sunday following Trump’s trip to Ireland, President Trump agreed that China spies on the US.
According to Fox News, Trump said that China “‘spies on us’ just as ‘we spy on them.’” This was in response to a Wall Street Journal article updated on Sept. 11 about Tehran acquiring satellite images of the Muwaffaq Salti Air Force base in Jordan from Chinese "entities." This occurred prior to a missile attack on the base on July 17 which resulted in the loss of 3 US troops.
Trump stated, “They basically do what we do.”
This comes as preparations are being made for an upcoming visit to the US by Chinese President Xi Jinping for a summit on Sept. 24. When President Trump was asked whether he would bring up this issue with Jinping, Trump said that Xi has “behaved reasonably well’, and also that ‘we behave reasonably well.” He added, “you know what they say? That China spies on us. I say you’re right, and we spy on them, too.”
According to the WSJ article, officials said that this incident provided clear evidence that Chinese entities have supported Iran, and that this had led to deadly consequences for the US military. These Chinese entities have not been identified, and Beijing had not been implicated to have direct involvement in this attack.
