Iran is demanding a prisoner swap after officials arrested 29-year-old Italian journalist Cecilia Sala two weeks ago in Tehran. After the Italian government demanded the release of Sala through its Iranian ambassador, Iran responded by demanding Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi be released from Italy's custody.

Abedini is an Iranian national who was arrested by Italy on behalf of the United States on December 16, Breitbart reports. The 38-year-old drone expert was accused by the US of defying sanctions and providing advanced military technology to Iran's forces, which were allegedly used in an Iran-backed drone attack that killed three US troops in Jordan in January 2024.

Abedini was indicted by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) "for conspiring with Mahdi Mohammad Sadeghi, a dual US-Iranian national, to illegally procure electronic components from American companies for use by the IRGC," the outlet states. Italian officials arrested Abedini at the Milan airport on behalf of the US. Sadeghi was simultaneously arrested in Massachusetts.

Three days later, on December 19, Sala was apprehended in Tehran and charged with “violating the laws of the Islamic Republic.”

Sala, an accomplished journalist and podcaster, has covered international topics such as the fall of Kabul, the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan and the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine. She has almost 500k followers on Instagram and is a regular on Italian news shows. Breitbart states that it "appeared likely that [Sala] was taken hostage by the Iranians to secure Abedini’s release."
