AVI ABELOW: Israel has its own deep state enemy within

I have been extremely critical of President Joe Biden and his administration throughout the war in Israel against Iran, Qatar and all their oil funded Sunni and Shiite proxies across the Middle East.

Instead of the Biden administration sending a clear message to all US allies in the world that an alliance with the United States is ironclad and trustworthy, they are instead sending the totally opposite message via their treatment of Israel. How can a US ally trust their alliance with the US if, during an existential war, America’s most reliable, and only democratic ally in the Middle East, Israel, can not rely on full diplomatic or military support from the Biden administration?

I am often asked lately why I’m not as critical of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as I am of other current and former Israeli politicians like former Prime Ministers Benjamin Gantz, Yair Lapid, Naftali Bennet and others.

It is directly connected to a topic that has been at the forefront of my discussions for years: just as the United States has the existence of an elite deep state, so too does Israel. A deep state that has been working tirelessly to undermine proudly Jewish policies and right-wing security policies in Israel, just as the deep state in the United States has consistently worked to undermine proudly American and security policies in America.

In Israel, this deep state is comprised of influential figures in the senior IDF command, the justice system, the establishment media, and career staffers in government ministries. It has wielded its power over years to thwart any and all efforts to strengthen Israel's security and assert our authentic and proper Jewish identity for our one-and-only Jewish State of Israel.

This deep state has been operating since Prime Minister Netanyahu’s Likud party replaced Israeli Labor as the leading political party in the late 1970s, and it has been working nonstop since the early days of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's tenure back in 1996.

From the moment Netanyahu was first elected Prime Minister in 1996, the deep state saw that he was the most significant threat yet to their hegemony over Israeli society, so they immediately launched a relentless legal warfare campaign to discredit and undermine him, using every tool at their disposal to push their agenda and maintain their grip on power.

The opening of witch hunt court cases to remove Netanyahu from office was just the beginning of their efforts to stifle any dissenting voices, discredit, delegitimize him, and maintain their stranglehold over Israel despite losing control over the Israeli political sphere.

Again, a very similar script to what President Donald Trump has experienced in the United States ever since he became President back in 2016.

Despite my critiques of Netanyahu over the years, I must acknowledge that he has served as a formidable bulwark against the tremendous international pressure arrayed against us, all while grappling with the equally formidable internal pressure exerted by the deep state within Israel. Netanyahu's steadfast leadership and unwavering commitment to Israel's security have been a source of strength and stability in the face of relentless opposition.

Israel's security establishment has consistently thwarted every military initiative by Netanyahu against Iran, including senior security and intelligence commanders saying "no" with the actual leaking of attack plans to the Obama White House to undermine Netanyahu's planned efforts to stop the Iranian threat head-on.

These actions, over the years by the most senior security and intelligence officials, not only jeopardize Israel's security but also undermine Netanyahu's ability as Prime Minister to protect Israeli citizens.

As we are in the middle of an existential war right now, we in Israel must address these systemic issues within our security establishment and ensure that Israel can effectively defend itself against existential threats without interference from within.

Retired Israeli General Yitzchak Brick, who, years ago, the government gave responsibility for researching the IDF's readiness, has been discussing this problem with the senior IDF command for years. General Brick has discussed how the Israeli army is not trained to win a war, but rather, our soldiers are only trained in how to manage a conflict.

Just recently, Chezi Nechama, a senior commander in the IDF reserves, reiterated this shortcoming in an interview with the Israeli newspaper Yediot Achronot. He also spoke about how lower-level IDF officers have no trust in the senior levels of the security establishment to win this war.

We are hosting a conference next week with leaders from around the world, in Jerusalem and online, discussing “What’s Next?” for Israel. While it is clear that the current war is not winding down, despite world pressure, we need to discuss vision and policy for where we are heading.

The time has come for the Jewish people to insist on a forward-looking roadmap that extends far beyond the immediate aftermath of conflicts and secures a thriving future. Central to this vision is embracing the politically incorrect truths about Israel; including stepping out into the light in addressing this deep state problem.

It also means stopping to cower in fear over discussing our creator’s role in Israel’s existence and future. It's crucial to recognize that our ultimate victory does not depend solely on human efforts but on divine providence, and stop apologizing for saying so. As we navigate the treacherous waters of international politics and contend with the machinations of the deep state, we must remain steadfast in our faith and resolute in our determination to defend Israel as a strong and proud Jewish state. Not enough people understand that the defense of Israel is not just for our best interest, but for the world, as Israel is the frontline against the growing Marxizt-Islamist revolution to destroy the whole freedom-loving world.

I continue to believe that Netanyahu is the best leader we have out of all the Prime Minister options. He is the only one of our realistic options, which includes Gantz, Lapid, Bennet, and Eizenkot, who understands how to navigate the international pressures and can work around the deep state as best as possible to protect the Jewish State of Israel and the Jewish people.

While the deep state in Israel may continue to pose challenges to our vision of a secure and prosperous future, we must never lose sight of the fact that we are not alone in this struggle. With faith, determination, and unwavering resolve, we will overcome our enemies, both foreign and domestic, and secure a brighter future for the Jewish people in our ancestral homeland, and for the whole freedom-loving world. Until we have an even better leader than Netanyahu, we must be thankful that he is our Prime Minister, and not any of the other dangerous options.
