A Somalian refugee has been charged in connection with the April 2023 death of his pregnant Swedish girlfriend after expressing concerns about how his conservative Muslim family would react to the two of them starting a family together.

Mohamedamin Abdirisek Ibrahim, 22, allegedly strangled 20-year-old Saga Forsgren Elneborg in their home in Örebro, a town 200km west of Stockholm, killing their unborn son in the process.

According to prosecutor Elizabeth Anderson, per the New York Post, Ibrahim allegedly killed Elneborg by "suffocating and strangling her by means of pressure on her neck with an impact on the trachea and the blood supply to the head."

She went on to suggest that the crime "took place in an honor context because the man wanted to preserve or restore his and his family's honor by killing the woman who was carrying his child."

"He never told his family about Saga or the child," Anderson continued. "But the suspect has been raised in a standard of honor, and he has learned that it is not OK for him to date a white woman. He must date a woman of the same culture. If he doesn't, he will be excluded."

Ibrahim, who has been charged with murder, denied all wrongdoing, and claims to still be in love with Elneborg.

As the Post reports, text messages between Ibrahim and Elneborg reveal that the former was quite anxious about having to tell his family about their relationship, and the child.

"I know we can make it, but I won't be able to keep my family," he told her after finding out she was pregnant, suggesting perhaps she should have an abortion. "If it had been possible, there would have been no problem with keeping the child.

Elneborg's mother said her daughter was "so happy" about her life with Ibrahim, and was looking forward to being a mother.
