At least eight fatalities were reported after a shooting at a Jehovah's Witness center in Hamburg, Germany, including the gunman. The shooting occured in the Gros Borstel district on Deelböge Street.

Local media reported that there are eight people injured as well.

Reports now suggest that the gunman may have been a former member of the religious community, according to the Daily Mail. It is believed that he was in his 30s or 40s, and that he used a pistol to carry out the attack.

According to the authorities, the gunman fired through a window before storming the building during a Bible study.

Investigators are still unsure about the motive, and urged people to refrain from speculating.

The federal warning system NINAward alerted people during the shooting, telling those nearby that "one or more unknown perpetrators shot at people in a church." Residents were told via the app to stay inside.

The shooting occurred at about 9 pm local time, during an event happening at the center.
