Paralympian Oscar Pistorious could be released early from prison after murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp

Oscar Pistorius could be released from prison "within weeks" after serving half of his 13-year sentence for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in their South African home in 2013.

A parole board is now considering releasing Pistorius on March 31, just 10 years after Steenkamp was fatally shot.

"We have been advised by the parole board that the hearing will take place on the 31 March, 2023," Pistorius' lawyer Julian Knight said. "It's an internal process."

The New York Post reported that Steenkamp's parents are unabelt to take action against the movement since all convicted criminals are eligible for parole after serving half their sentence.

It has been reported that Pistiorius will be under 24-hour police protection if he is released this month, due to fears of retaliation. According to the Daily Mail, Pistorius could be the target of gang members who will seek to avenge the death of the young woman.

Pistorius' father, Henke, said that his son has become a spiritual leader during his time behind bars. He claimed that Pistorius has managed to recruit a violent gang leader into his Bible study and prayer group.

"I have no doubt that Oscar has changed the environment in the prison for the better," Henke said.

"He is helping to mediate between people and is having a positive influence. He can feel he is making a difference to others who really needed a difference to be made...to give their lives meaning, purpose and some hope."

"As a result, things have also improved for him. It's a wonderful story."

It was on Valentine's Day in 2013 when Pistorius, a gold medalist Paralympian, shot Reeva Steenkamp through a bathroom door inside their home. The prosecution went on to suggest that he deliberately shot Steenkamp four times following an intense argument that they had that day. However, Pistorius insisted that he woke up in the night and fired off the rounds, mistaking his girlfriend for a dangerous intruder.

Pistorius had reportedly been on the radar of Johannesburg's underworld before the fatal shooting. Pistorius was said to have threatened one of the South African city's most notorious hardmen, according to the Daily Mail.

Pistorius had allegedly fired a gun from a sunroof, and then had fired a handgun while at a restaraunt just a few weeks before he fatally shot Steenkamp. As a result, Pistorius became a focus of the city's underworld.

According to a prosecutor in 2014, Pistorious offered Steenkamp's parents $34,000 after he killed her, but the family turned it down, suggesting that they did not want to accept "blood money."

Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide in 2014. Though he was sentenced to five years in prison, he was cleared of the murder charge.

After appealing the conviction, he was permitted to serve house arrest at his uncle's mansion in Pretoria in 2015.

Pistorius was subsequently found guilty of murder during an appeal, which added six additional years to his prison sentence.

Pistorius won a total of six gold medals over the course of three Olympics.
