A revered statue of the Virgin Mary has been desecrated and part of a church set ablaze in Medjugorje, one of the world's most famous Catholic pilgrimage sites, in what parish officials have described as a heartbreaking act of vandalism just days before tens of thousands of pilgrims are due to arrive.
Bosnian authorities arrested a suspect Tuesday after the overnight attacks, which targeted both the famed Marian shrine on Apparition Hill and nearby St. James Church. Pilgrims arriving at the shrine were met with the shocking sight of the Virgin Mary's face and hands covered in black paint. Across the pedestal beneath the statue, vandals had spray-painted the words: "Devil in a skirt." Nearby, another banner attacked Medjugorje's visionaries, branding them "fraudsters" and claiming to possess proof against them.
The devastation did not end there. Surveillance footage showed a man entering St. James Church, dousing the altar with gasoline before igniting a blaze that rapidly engulfed part of the sanctuary. Images from the scene showed flames tearing through the church as firefighters battled the inferno. The attacks came only days before Medjugorje's annual International Youth Festival, which is expected to draw more than 50,000 Catholic pilgrims from across the globe. In a statement, the Medjugorje Parish Office condemned the desecration. "It is with great sadness that we received the news of the act of vandalism," the parish said. "The affected areas are being cleaned and restored as quickly as possible. We pray for the conversion of the hearts of those who committed this act."
The parish also called on the faithful to answer the attack through "prayer, fasting and forgiveness." Despite the shocking scenes, hundreds of pilgrims continued making their way to the shrine as volunteers carefully cleaned the black paint from the Virgin Mary's face and began restoring the damaged site. Medjugorje, in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, has attracted millions of pilgrims since 1981, when six children reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary on Apparition Hill. Several of the original visionaries maintain they continue receiving messages from Mary to this day.
Although the Vatican has never formally declared the reported apparitions to be supernatural, it announced in 2024 that Catholics could continue organizing pilgrimages and public acts of devotion there. Ivan Dragićević is one of the original visionaries who says he has experienced daily apparitions for decades. "Our Lady has been inviting us for decades to peace, to conversion, and to prayer," he said. "What comes from God cannot be defeated by human wickedness. May this event be an incentive to open our hearts even more to Christ."
Bosnian police continue investigating both the desecration of the Marian shrine and the suspected arson attack on St. James Church as restoration work gets underway at one of Catholicism's best-known pilgrimage destinations.
