A woman in her 50s has been seriously injured after being stabbed inside a Catholic church in Ireland, just moments before morning Mass was due to begin.
The attack unfolded at approximately 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday at Holy Cross Church in Tramore, County Waterford, as parishioners gathered to pray the Rosary before the service. The victim, a well-known member of the parish, suffered a single stab wound near the altar and was rushed to Waterford University Hospital with serious injuries. A man in his 30s was arrested a short time later at a nearby residence and remains in Garda custody under Section 4 of Ireland's Criminal Justice Act 1984. He was unknown to the victim, but is known to authorities. Police said a knife recovered at the scene has been seized for forensic examination.
Multiple Garda units, including officers from the Armed Support Unit, responded alongside paramedics from the National Ambulance Service. Parish priest Fr. Richard O'Halloran described the incident as "very shocking," praising parishioners and a fellow priest for their quick actions during the attack. "The people and indeed my colleague who was there at the time responded wonderfully well," he said. "All the emergency services were called and they looked after everything that was happening. This was an incident before Mass. It was in the main body of the church."
Fr. O'Halloran said he believed the attack appeared to be random but stressed the investigation remains in the hands of Gardaí. The Diocese of Waterford said it was praying for the victim's recovery. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured parishioner, and we pray for her full and speedy recovery," the diocese said in a statement, while also thanking parishioners, clergy, Gardaí and emergency responders for their actions during the frightening incident.
Local officials said the attack has left the normally quiet seaside town in disbelief. "People are deeply shocked to hear of this early morning attack," Fianna Fáil councillor Eamon Quinlan said. "This type of incident is unheard of here." Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with video footage from the Summerhill area between 9:15 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. to come forward as the investigation continues.
