The Department of Justice Friday announced an update to the Trump witch hunt, requiring the IRS to release the former president’s tax returns to the House Ways and Means Committee.
The Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel said the committee showed “sufficient reasons” to validate its request to review Trump’s taxes, Fox News reports.
“The Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has invoked sufficient reasons for requesting the former President’s tax information,” Dawn Johnsen, acting assistant attorney general wrote. “Under section 6103(f)(1), Treasury must furnish the information to the Committee.”
Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, a democrat, celebrated the decision.
“As I have maintained for years, the Committee's case is very strong and the law is on our side. I am glad that the Department of Justice agrees and that we can move forward,” Neal said.
Trump has yet to make a comment.
