There is a popular misconception of the phrase “Peace on earth and good will towards men.” The actual Latin translation from the ancient Roman Catholic hymn “Gloria in Excelsis Deo,” is “Peace on earth to men of good will.”
HUMAN EVENTS wishes a Merry Christmas and says thank you to our troops who sacrifice much more than the joys of spending this holiday with their family and friends. Our thoughts are with you always, as you are our countries finest and truly men of good will.
For the rest of us, the spirit of Christmas is alive through our own good will no matter what religion we embrace. Good will is found in many of the things that the holiday season represents. To me good will means charity and kindness, and Christmas should be celebrated through the act of selfless giving and devotion to family, friends and even deserving strangers.
Kindness is reflected in the spare change you drop in a Salvation Army holiday donation can, or the act of turning up Bing Crosby's “White Christmas” on your car radio while stuck in holiday traffic, instead of yelling at the driver of the Honda Civic in front of you.
It is reflected in the invitation to your dinner table extended to a lonely friend, or a gift given to a less fortunate child. This is good will, and this is the true meaning of Christmas.

Reflect this season on your loved ones and the good will of conservatives that preserves America through traditional family values, limited government and free enterprise.
