No kidding. You won’t read those words in Human Events often. But they are necessary today.

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D.-N.Y.) is calling for Congress to immediately enact legislation to bar foreign governments from operating port facilities in the United States. The urgency is necessary because the deal allowing the UAE to manage operations at six U.S. ports is scheduled to take effect March 2.

Clinton's proposal embraces a solid principle, but may not go far enough in the view of many conservatives. Why, they ask, should any foreign government be allowed to own any strategic asset in the United States? If the U.S. government tried to buy a company that manages U.S. ports, good conservatives would oppose it, correctly calling it socialism. Why should we let a foreign regime do so - let alone an authoritarian Persian Gulf emirate that has a history of aiding the Taliban?
