Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D.-Calif.) will unveil legislation Tuesday that targets the recently discovered border tunnels along the U.S.-Mexico border. Yes, you read that correctly, it's Dianne Feinstein we're talking about.

Feinstein has done a better job than most Republicans on the issue of border security. In fact, she told my colleague, Amanda Carpenter, that she supports building a fence along the border—a position many in the GOP are too afraid to take.

Here's the release Feinstein put out Monday with details of her new bill:

On Tuesday, February 21, 2006 U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) will meet with Federal and State border officials to discuss the recent discovery of an underground tunnel crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.  Following the closed briefing, Senator Feinstein will hold a news conference unveiling new legislation addressing such border tunnels.

Schedule of Events:

Where: V&F Distributors Warehouse (Location of the U.S. entrance to the recently discovered border tunnel)
8640 Siempre Viva Road
San Diego, CA 92154-6211

Closed Briefing: Senator Feinstein will be briefed by Federal, State, and Local officials on border tunnels, incursions by the Mexican army, and illegal aliens other than Mexicans entering the United States.

10:15 a.m. Photo-op: Upon her arrival at the warehouse, Senator Feinstein will examine the opening of the half-mile long tunnel stretching from San Diego through to Tijuana, Mexico discovered by border officials on January 24, 2006.  (Due to security concerns, there will be a pool feed of images and stills.)

10:30 a.m. News Conference: Senator Feinstein will discuss tunnels and underground passages crossing international borders into the United States, and will be joined by:

  • San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders,
  • Police Chief Bill Lansdowne, and
  • Sheriff Bill Kolender.
