Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R.-W.Va.), who nearly challenged Sen. Robert Byrd this November, said the elder Democrat senator is in serious trouble now that media mogul John Raese has entered the race.

Raese is a high profile candidate who Byrd cannot shy away from. Capito said it was likely Raese’s decision to run that prompted Byrd to vote for Samuel Alito’s confirmation to the Supreme Court today.

“When I was considering running for the seat,” Capito said, “I took credit for Byrd’s vote for John Roberts. I think it’s no coincidence.”

Capito said Raese would be a solid contender - even against the well-known Byrd. She said to expect an active and aggressive campaign.
