Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean is spending funds at a rate that alarms top Democratic Party leaders, reports Roll Call today.

After fundraising more than $51 million for the committee this past year, only $5.5 million is still sitting the bank.

Dean is said to have spent most of the money to hire party organizers throughout the 50 states - but that doesn’t make Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid or House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi feel much better.

"Several well-informed Democratic sources said Congressional leaders were furious last week when they learned the DNC has just $5.5 million in the bank, compared to the Republican national Committee’s $34 million."

But, apparently Dean doesn’t need the support of party leaders, according to the article, which quoted a Democratic source said to be familiar with DNC operations:

"Dean is very powerful within the base of the party and from the beginning hasn’t [cared] about what Pelosi and Reid think He doesn’t need them, he’s his own power center."
