Initial reports look very optimistic about the elections held in Iraq. It looks like turnout may be even higher for this election than previous ones, considering the heavy Sunni turnout. This is very encouraging.

Every time I think about the Iraqi populace going to the polls, on foot, while braving mortar attacks and bombs to cast a little piece of paper into a box, I am awed.

The pundits who babble about what we could be doing better - or whether should just pack up and leave - need to look at those brave people with purple fingers and consider what is going on.

Let me tell you what I see. I see very brave people sticking it in the eye of terrorist, tyrants and thugs the world over. I have no illusions that Iraq will have a democracy as we are accustomed to here in the US, but there is no disputing the fact that the Iraqi people are determining their own fate.

Whatever you might think about Bush and his policies in Iraq. Whatever you might thinks about the reasons why we are there, you must admit that today is a great day for freedom.
