The Project for Excellence in Journalism report also pondered the weighty question of whether the results might actually "fuel . . . speculation" of media bias.

"The study's findings may add fuel to speculation, depending on the outcome of the election, of the influence of the debates, the media, and claims of press bias toward Kerry," said the report. "Whatever the case, the study reinforces the sense that the press, at least the political press, has become highly interpretative and even judgmental in its approach."
