Five days after HUMAN EVENTS called in a cover-page editorial ("Prosecute the Forger") for the investigation and prosecution of the person or persons who created the bogus documents used by CBS to attack President Bush's Texas Air National Guard service, Rep. Lamar Smith (R.-Tex.) sent a letter co-signed by 52 U.S. House members to Texas Atty. Gen. Greg Abbott and U.S. Attorney Richard B. Roper asking that they do just that.

"A crime may have been committed to influence the outcome of a presidential election while our commander in chief leads the war on terror," wrote the lawmakers. "This is a grave offense that demands the attention of the appropriate law enforcement and investigative authorities. Based on information available about the creation and transmittal of the document, we request an immediate criminal investigation, and prosecution, if warranted." Major Garrett of Fox News later reported that Abbott has indeed launched an investigation under the auspices of the Texas Rangers.
