Heart to Heart.
Hillary was all set to visit the New York State fair and probably continue campaigning all the way through November when she learned that her husband had to undergo coronary bypass surgery. Sources close to the usually unshakable Mrs. Clinton said she seemed extremely concerned and "a little freaked" as she rushed to New York from the State Fair near Syracuse yesterday. "She's not herself," one source told the New York Daily News, and "Hillary Watch" noted that the Missus did indeed seem shaken as she broke the news at the fairgrounds. "You have heard by now, because it just hit the news, he was admitted into Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in the last hour or so," she announced to the crowd. At times she seemed to have trouble maintaining her composure, sometimes she attempted a weak smile. "Let me just express the personal regrets of my husband," claiming that the former President looks forward to coming to the fair every year. "He believes coming to the state fair is one of his obligations as a senator's spouse," Hillary said, laughing tersely. "So I'm leaving here, and I know you understand," she said. "And I'm sorry I'm not going to get a chance to see each of you personally." She arrived at her husband's upper Manhattan hospital in a convoy of two vans shortly after 3:30 p.m. and was rushed inside. When she reappeared four hours later, she seemed in better spirits and joked that "We're delighted we have good health insurance." She added that she hoped "someday everybody will be able to say the same thing." After the successful quadruple bypass surgery, Hillary released a statement saying that "Chelsea and I thank God and the incredible medical team and staff here at New York Presbyterian Hospital for taking such good care of my husband. Bill, Chelsea and I stayed up pretty late last night talking, playing games and just being with each other. These past few days have been quite an emotional roller coaster for us...we are so grateful to the people of this hospital and so many others around the country and the world who have been giving us their prayers and support." Chelsea Morning.
With husband Bill on the mend, Hillary had to skip picking up an award for supporting the music industry during the "Grammys on the Hill" dinner in Washington, D.C. But one of Hillary's friends and constituents, singer Judy Collins, told the Washington Post that she would personally deliver the trophy to the senator later in New York. Collins, who sang at the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences event, said that "I'm going to sing 'Chelsea Morning' as a tribute to the Clintons because they named Chelsea after my recording of that song. Even if Hillary's not there, she'll appreciate it." Gay Mafia Strikes Again.
The New York Post reports that homosexual activists are "disappointed" in Hillary because of her failure to endorse same-sex "marriage." Now the activists are focusing on homosexual designer Marc Jacobs, who has a window in his showcase store "devoted to" Mrs. Clinton, with proceeds going to Friends of Clinton. Jacobs, it will be remembered, has been making colorful and fashionable Hillary "T-Shirts" for sale. However, a flamboyant source told the Post that "Jacobs has to get over the glamour and glitter of Sen. Clinton and face reality-she is no friend to the gay community." In response, a spokesperson for the senator said Hillary "believes that people in committed relationships should have equal rights and benefits and has long supported civil unions." HRC MIA at RNC.
Although Hillary and fellow New Yorker Sen. Chuck Schumer (D.) were expected to lead the charge against Republicans during the GOP national convention in New York City, both were "missing in action," and left the job to lesser-known Democrats. Hillary did appear on several Sunday morning political shows during the convention, but did not lead a Democratic "truth squad," as was originally anticipated. Matt Bennett, a Democratic National Committee spokesman, said that "We want to make clear this is the Democratic response. It's not the Hillary show."
