In his speech at the Republican National Convention, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani mocked John Kerry for his multiple flip-flops on the Iraq War: "At this rate, with 64 days left," said Giuliani, "he still has time to change his position at least three or four more times." Giuiliani, however, may have underestimated Kerry.

Only four days after the convention, Kerry did another Iraq War flip-flop. In early August, President Bush had challenged Kerry on the war. "My opponent hasn't answered the question of whether, knowing what we know now, he would have supported going into Iraq," said Bush. "The American people deserve a clear yes-or-no answer." On August 9, Kerry responded: "I'll answer it directly," he said. "Yes, I would have voted for the authority. I believe it is the right authority for a President to have." Then, on September 6, Kerry said of the Iraq War: "It's the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time."
