Democrats have attacked Unfit for Command author John O'Neill as a partisan Republican, but O'Neill thoroughly rebutted the charge in a conversation with the editors of HUMAN EVENTS.

Asked if he was a Republican, O'Neill said, "No, actually I'm not. . . . I've been very independent in my voting patterns." When specifically asked which candidate he voted for in the 2000 presidential election, he said, "I actually voted for Gore for President in 2000, and I also voted for Perot twice." O'Neill added that he also voted for Hubert Humphrey in 1968, and told President Nixon that fact to his face when he met Nixon in the bugged pre-Watergate Oval Office in 1971.
