After having his last attempt to vote in the Senate thwarted on Tuesday, presidential hopeful John Kerry skipped town for San Francisco and San Jose, where his Wednesday fundraising events garnered $1.7 million for his campaign.

"One hundred and fifty years ago, prospectors came out here to California, looking for silver and gold,'' Kerry told crowd at a breakfast fundraiser. "And here I am, doing the same thing.''

While away on his fundraising spree, the Senator did not seem especially informed about an upcoming Senate vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment.

"I have no idea when that (same-sex marriage) vote is even scheduled,??¢â???¬ he said in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle.

Debate on whether to proceed to voting on the amendment is scheduled for the week of July 12, with a vote expected on July 14 or 15.
