President Bush called Rumsfeld into the Oval Office last Wednesday to tell him he was "not happy" that the first time he saw the sickening photographs from Abu Ghraib prison was when they were broadcast on CBS's "60 Minutes II" the week before. A Pentagon report on the abuse at the prison had been completed in March-but Rumsfeld admitted he had read only its executive summary.

The White House then pointedly leaked news of Bush's displeasure with Rumsfeld. But when the President spoke with Arab media outlets the same day, he expressed "confidence" in his secretary of Defense. Meanwhile, White House spokesman Scott McLellan said: "The President very much appreciates the job Secretary Rumsfeld is doing and the President has great confidence in his leadership."
