Hillary Meets Nixon.
During the Watergate hearings, a young Hillary Rodham worked for the House Judiciary Committee investigating President Richard Nixon. Now one-time Nixon aide Monica Crowley reveals that First Lady Hillary Clinton met Nixon for the first time in 1993, and the former Watergate staffer actually praised the disgraced ex-President for being "light years ahead of his time." Mrs. Clinton was apparently referring to Nixon's proposed health care plan, which Hillary viewed as a "blueprint" for her own massive, socialized medicine plan. Crowley writes how her old boss wrote to Bill Clinton in 1992 to congratulate him on "a very well-run campaign." However, when three months passed without a reply from the President, Nixon complained, "What do you expect? They're Arkansas dogpatch." But in 1993 Nixon was invited to his old residence, the White House, where he was greeted by Mrs. Clinton. Slick Willie's wife reportedly told Nixon that "Your health care reform legislation in 1973-74 was so good that we are using it as a blueprint for our own package." Then she gave Nixon quite a back-handed compliment, saying that "Had you survived in office, you would have been light years ahead of your time." Crowley says that this infuriated Nixon, who later said, "Had I survived in office! Maybe I could have if she hadn't been working to impeach me." Although he died in 1994, Nixon may have enjoyed the fact that Hillary's husband became the first man elected President to be impeached, an outcome the 37th President managed to avoid by resigning in 1974. Hard Time.
The deranged man who threatened to kill Hillary several months ago received an additional 18 months in prison to go along with his original 30-month sentence for a previous conviction. This prolonged sentence is apparently just what the inmate wanted, as his lawyer claimed that his client never intended to carry out the threat and described it as a ploy to keep from facing the world outside prison. "It was a very elegant way to commit a crime," said his public defender. Holy War.
Sen. Clinton was recently asked to intervene in a dispute between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a Jewish organization. Apparently, it is a practice of the Mormon Church to posthumously baptize holocaust victims, even though it was agreed in 1995 that the practice would stop. Since it evidently has continued to this day, the New York based World Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors "was so outraged" that it asked Hillary to step in and stop the unauthorized baptizing. As a result, it was just reported that Hillary met with her Mormon colleague, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R.-Utah), to discuss the situation. Says Hill: "It was a private meeting between two senators," and Sen. Hatch also declined to comment. The Holocuast Survivor spokesman said that Hillary is "now involved in planning our next step," and that "We are very hopeful that we will be able to convince the church to stop." Oddly enough, it was revealed at the meeting with Sen. Hatch that Hillary's late father, Hugh Rodham, was posthumously baptized by the LDS in September 2002. HRC and JFK
Hillary joined John Kerry in Harlem on Wednesday for a town hall meeting, her first campaign appearance with the presumptive Democratic candidate. Before the event, her flack promised that the audience would see and "hear a very enthusiastic Sen. Clinton explain why she believes John Kerry should be the next President of the United States." Of course, anyone looks enthusiastic next to the somber and long-faced Kerry. Sure enough, Hillary appeared relaxed and in good humor, standing on stage while Kerry walked among the audience and droned on and on about education and Iraq. Hillary's appearance can't hurt the Kerry campaign - except maybe to emphasize the difference in star power between the two - especially as a new poll showed that Sen. Clinton's approval rating in the state has reached an all-time high of 62%, while she also registered a 30% disapproval rating. On the other hand, another recent poll indicated that Kerry has a hefty 17-point lead over President Bush in the liberal state, so maybe Hillary's appearance won't really make that much difference in New York after all. It appears that New Yorkers may agree: The same poll showed that only 7% think Kerry should ask Hillary to be his running mate, while 19% support Sen. John Edwards for Vice President.
