South Dakota Indian activist Tim Giago says he's running for the Senate as an independent, which could spell trouble for Sen. Tom Daschle's (D.-S.D.) re-election bid. Recall that in 2002, Indians gave Sen. Tim Johnson (D.-S.D.) just enough votes for a narrow victory over Republican John Thune.

Thune, a former member of the House, will be on the ballot again this fall, this time challenging Daschle. Giago, a newspaper publisher, is a member of the Oglala tribe. He has until June 1 to obtain 3,346 signatures.
