Specter is desperately reaching out to liberal Democrats to save his re-election bid, even urging liberals to switch their registration just long enough to vote for him in the primary.
Said Pittsburgh Tribune-Review columnist Dmitri Vassilaros: "Specter is not beseeching liberals to infiltrate the Republican primary because he is stupid or because he has some sort of political death wish. Quite the opposite. Specter is dialing 911 to get Democrat converts because he is very smart. He knows how to read public opinion polls."
