WEST VS. MULTICULTURALISM: Last week, Rep. Tom Tancredo (R.-Colo.) and 13 colleagues launched a project to promote the teaching of "the benefits of Western Civilization in our public schools. The project called 'Our Heritage. . . Our Hope' is a movement to help curb the spread of radical multiculturalism in America's classrooms. The national effort is supported by a number of organizations, and several state legislators have already agreed to participate." Noted Tancredo, "America is the only nation on earth founded on ideas. And if we fail to transmit those ideas to our children and immigrants, the ideas will be lost and so will our nation."

PATRIOT RENEWAL: Some important provisions of the Patriot Act, an essential tool in anti-terrorism investigations, are due to expire if Congress does not renew them this year. President Bush called for the act's renewal on March 2, the first anniversary of the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. "Key provisions of the Patriot Act are set to expire next year, but the threats that our nation faces will not expire on schedule," noted Rep. Scott Garrett (R.-N.J.). "In order to protect our citizens, law enforcement agencies need this act renewed to better share information, track terrorists, and disrupt their cells to seize their assets."

AZ PRO-LIFERS UNITE: Pro-lifers in Arizona have gone on a lobbying blitz to convince Gov. Janet Napolitano to sign a bill mandating a 24-hour waiting period for abortion. Ads began airing March 1 that ask her to sign the bill. "The 30-second spots sparked an enormous response: By 5 p.m. Monday, Napolitano's office had received more than 600 calls, 1,000 e-mails and 200 faxes on the subject, an overwhelming majority in favor of her signing the measure," reported the Arizona Republic March 2. "The ads are scheduled to run 150 times until Thursday." The waiting period will give time for women to learn and think more about abortion before they commit it. The ads feature women who regret having their abortions-the latest strategy in pro-life activism. In one of the ads, a woman addresses Napolitano and says, "On behalf of the women who have suffered, I would just beg you to not veto this bill. It's so important for women to know."

FREE CHINA: As the United States continues to coddle a hostile and oppressive Communist China, Rep. Chris Cox (R.-Calif.) said on the House floor on March 2, "I rise in strong support of H Res 530, which urges a representative of the United States to the 60th Session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights to introduce a resolution calling upon the government of the People's Republic of China to end its human rights violations. A year ago, the government of the PRC agreed to invite three international human rights organizations to China without conditions. . . . Two visits were scheduled, but the arrangement was that they were supposed to come without conditions and none of those visits has taken place precisely because of unacceptable preconditions imposed in violation of its own promises by the government of the People's Republic of China." THEY WANT JUNIOR: Homosexual rights activists may be about to achieve another victory. The Central Ohio United Way is threatening to withhold $500,000 from the Simon Kenton Council of Boy Scouts because the scouts won't allow homosexual men to take young boys camping. "The Central Ohio United Way promised donors they would be supporting the Boy Scouts with their donations," wrote Don Wildmon, chairman of the American Family Association, last week. "The United Way is now betraying the trust of thousands of donors in their community, who should now cut their financial support of the organization. The good news is, the Simon Kenton Boy Scout Council is standing firm!"

ANTI-CHRISTIAN PETA: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) doesn't just dislike meat-eaters, it's anti-Christian. Before Easter, PETA billboards will feature the picture of a pig with the words, "He died for your sins-go vegetarian." Said Bruce Friedrich, PETA's director of vegan outreach, "Today's factory farms and slaughterhouses are the embodiment of violence, bloodshed and exploitation. Christians can extend the message 'God is love' to animals by not eating them."
