In an effort to keep the American people informed about where their tax dollars are going and to keep politicians accountable, we are bringing to you a regular list of pork projects delivered fresh from the fiscal 2004 omnibus spending bill.
The Senate has yet to vote on the Omnibus Appropriations Bill, so it's not too late to defeat it. You can contact your Senator by dialing the Senate switchboard and asking for your Senator's office: 202-224-3121.
$338,848,000 to the Legal Services Corporation
-LSC: HUMAN EVENTS' "Most Outrageous Government Program" of 2003. That's just $10 million above the President's request, but 339 million dollars too many for our taste.
$46,222,000 for "rural housing assistance grants"
$1,353,000 for the "regional rural development centers" program
-That's Midwestern for "Republican Welfare."
$259,000 "University of Northern Iowa Immigration Services for Iowa Communities"
$75,000 Philadelphia Area Immigration Resource Center, Philadelphia, PA to provide employment and legal assistance for immigrants in Southeastern Pennsylvania
-Taxpayers will foot the bill to help illegal immigrants game the immigration court system.
$25,000,000 for water and waste disposal systems to benefit the Colonias along the United States/Mexico border
-Instead of enforcing our immigration laws, the government uses taxpayer money to encourage the development of mostly illegal immigrant shanty-towns along the Arizona, New Mexico and Texas border. These towns would never pass the health code anywhere else in the U.S., and should be dismantled. Instead, Congress seems intent on making them permanent settlements. Inhabitants of these colonias are given huge infusions of federal cash, provided they keep living there and don't try to improve their economic situation too much.
