Just last Friday in this space people read about a new Washington Post poll showing increased opposition to homosexual marriage and the recent actions of the Episcopal Church. Today the Associated Press reported the findings of a new poll; this one reveals even greater support for a ban on "gay" marriage and the rising costs for politicians who will not take a stand for traditional marriage.
Of those polled, 52% favor a legal ban on homosexual marriages, and 53% say they oppose civil unions - a significant increase from the 46% who supported civil unions just three years ago.
Perhaps even more significant is the fact that 54% favor a constitutional amendment that specifies marriage to be only between a man and a woman, barring any other type of "marriage."
In the area of politics, the AP reported that "about one-third of people who identified themselves as Democrats and independents said they would be less likely to support a candidate who backs civil unions. Twice as many Republicans said they feel that way." Also, more than 40% of Democrats and about two-thirds of Republicans support laws against homosexual marriage.
This is just more good news for Republicans. They are finding that this is an issue on which they can win, because many average Democrats are realizing that their morals rarely line up with those of the party leadership.
