Video going viral across social media shows North African migrants in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta capturing a baby dolphin swimming in waters just off shore, bashing it over the head with a stick, and holding it above their heads like a trophy. Dolphins are a protected species in Spain and across the European Union.
A large group of men is seen in the shared videos celebrating their capture of the dolphin as locals rush in telling them that it's illegal to treat the dolphin this way, and illegal to eat it, too, if that was their plan. Locals began a petition, reports The Daily Mail, to hold the men accountable for their actions.
The petition was launched by Nadia Garcia Gomez, who said "On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, a disoriented dolphin calf swimming near the shore at Trampolin Beach, in Ceuta, was brutally pulled from the water. Witnesses and local media reported that the animal was handled as if it were an object and violently struck on the head with a stick, causing its immediate death."
"The shocking images shared on social media show those responsible displaying the cetacean's lifeless body as if it were a trophy," she went on, "This act of extreme and unjustifiable cruelty cannot go unpunished. Dolphins are strictly protected species under Spanish and European laws, and mistreatment of them constitutes a serious criminal offence."
The outlet report that the dolphin calf was "swimming close to the shore before being pulled from the water and struck on the head with a stick by one of the group." A "local worker," they report, "witnessed the incident and intervened, shouting at the group not to hit or handle the animal and to call an animal rescue service."
European political commentator Eva Vlardingerbroek remarked "Everyone is rightfully outraged over migrants in Ceuta beating a baby dolphin to death, but European children are raped and killed by migrants on a daily basis and we barely see this level of fury. It took a dolphin calf. That says something about the way our society views the value of human children. Take the Lindsay Clancy case. She strangled her three children to death and the left and feminists all rushed to her defense. If she had strangled three dolphin calves instead, none of them would have defended her. There’s something deeply wrong here."
The tiny North African enclave was invaded by migrants from North Africa in July, with over 72,000 primarily men overrunning the borders between Ceuta and Morocco while others swam for shore and took up residence on the beaches. While many were sent back, some 5,000 remain living on the streets and beaches.
On Thursday, Spaniards took to the streets across the mainland to protest the lack of action they see from the socialist government in dealing with the migrant crisis. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that he stands with the people of Ceuta, but the leader of the opposition Vox party has called him a traitor.
