Leah Stewart, 35, described by her family as a passionate educator who is "full of life and energy," was struck down on Saturday, June 13th, while enjoying the ocean she loved at Coogee Beach in Sydney, Australia. The tragedy occurred despite Stewart swimming very close to the shoreline, adhering to beach safety protocols by staying strictly inside the patrolled flag zone.
The encounter has left the family deeply traumatized. Despite the best efforts of immediate medical interventions, Stewart remains in critical condition. Medical teams at St. Vincent's Hospital have already subjected her to multiple emergency surgeries, which tragically required the amputation of her arm.
"Leah faces a long road to recovery and your support will make a huge difference in her quality of life, rehabilitation and ability to go back to being a mum to her much loved one-year-old daughter," her brother said.
Josh added: "Our sincere thanks to the lifesavers, first responders, helicopter crew, and to the dedicated medical team at St. Vincent's who have been caring for Leah."
