The Supreme Court of Brazil has ordered that former President Jair Bolsonaro be placed on house arrest. This comes as the former leader is set to stand trial after being accused of plotting a coup.

In his decision, Justice Alexandre de Moraes said that Bolsonaro had not complied with the judicial restraining orders imposed on him in July, per Reuters. Bolsonaro has been banned from receiving any visitors other than his lawyers or those authorized by the court.

Under the July order, Bolsonaro was prohibited from communicating with foreign ambassadors and diplomats, approaching embassies, and leaving the house at night. He was also barred from using social media or contacting others under investigation by the Supreme Court, including his son, Eduardo Bolsonaro. Moraes said that Bolsonaro had violated the social media aspect of his July order by posting content on the social media channels of his three sons.

Moraes said that Bolsonaro has spread messages with "a clear content of encouragement and instigation to attacks against the Supreme Court and a blatant support for foreign intervention in the Brazilian Judiciary."

Bolsonaro has been accused by prosecutors of heading a criminal organization that plotted to overturn the country’s 2022 election which saw Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva win. The group also allegedly planned to kill the new president.

Moraes has been under fire previously, with protestors in Brazil taking to the streets of their country in September to demand his removal after he banned the social media platform X in the country.
