Syria’s newly appointed President Ahmed al-Sharaa expressed optimism about U.S. President Doanld Trump’s potential role in bringing about global stability, saying that the U.S. president could "play a big role in achieving global peace."
During an appearance on the Leading podcast with hosts Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell, Sharaa praised Trump’s leadership thus far regarding his approach to international conflict resolution. He said that “Trump has brought a positive message” and noted that his involvement could be instrumental in ending the war in Ukraine.
“He is focused on domestic policy [and] revitalising the US economy. He’s also interested in peacebuilding in the Middle East as it has caused quite a bit of instability over the last two decades. It’s a promising start," he said.
Sharaa, who previously led the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), took control of Syria after ousting Bashar al-Assad’s government in December. Since assuming power, he has sought to reshape both his image and his political stance, distancing himself from the sectarian violence of the previous regime.
His government has established a transitional parliament, with plans for elections within four years. Sharaa opted for a suit and tie during the interview, replacing his usual military attire.
Despite his praise for Trump’s peace efforts, Sharaa was critical of the president’s remarks about “clearing out” Gaza and transforming it into the "Riviera" of the Middle East.
“I believe no power can drive people from their land. Many countries have tried to do it and they have all failed, especially during the recent war in Gaza,” he said. “The people endured pain, killing and destruction yet they refused to leave their land. It would be neither wise nor morally or politically right for Trump to lead an effort to force Palestinians out of their land.”
