Passengers stop father from hijacking Volaris flight in Mexico

Passengers aboard a flight in Mexico stepped in to stop a father who was attempting to hijack the plane. The would-be hijacker, only identified as Mario, 31, was reportedly trying to divert the Volaris Airlines aircraft to San Diego from its intended destination of Tijuana. The incident was filmed by one of the passengers.



The Daily Mail reports that a witness stated Mario grabbed a flight attendant and took hold of the plane's door handle before threatening to jump out of the plane with a staff member. The footage showed people screaming and begging him to keep the door closed.

Crew members then detained Mario after a passenger intervened. He was reportedly traveling with his wife and children. The flight, which initially departed form El Bajío in central Mexico, was forced to make an emergency landing in Guadalajara, where Mario was taken into custody.
 

A Volaris spokesperson said: "On flight 3041, which covered the route of El Bajío to Tijuana, a passenger tried, through the use of force, to divert the plane to the United States.

"The crew acted in accordance with the established safety procedures and, according to the protocol, the plane was diverted to Guadalajara airport. Where the airline made the passenger available and in the custody of the competent authorities. Volaris has been constituted as an accusing party to ensure that it faces the full weight of the law, until its last consequences. All passengers, crew and aircraft are safe.

"The rest of the passengers were protected to continue their flight to the final destination. Volaris regrets the inconvenience caused by this situation. For Volaris, the safety of our passengers and crews is the top priority."
