A manhunt was launched to find the suspect, who was believed to have been armed with a crossbow. Around 24 hours later, 26-year-old Kyle Clifford was tracked down and taken to hospital where he will recover from his own injuries before being taken into custody.
According to the BBC, first responders arrived on scene around 7 pm Tuesday local time after Hunt returned from work to find his family suffering from serious wounds. They attempted to revive the victims, but it was too late; they were pronounced dead.
Authorities quickly identified Clifford as the suspect and narrowed down his location to Hertfordshire and north London. He was apprehended near Lavender Hill Cemetary in Enfield shortly after 6 pm Wednesday without incident. According to the Daily Mail, Clifford is the ex-boyfriend of one of the daughters, Louise Hunt.
Clifford, who previously served in the army, is believed to have known the victims, but the exact relationship was not disclosed, per BBC. Authorities suggested the killings appear to have been "targeted."
When it was revealed that Hunt's wife and daughter had died, tributes poured in from his colleagues. BBC 5 Live called the news "utterly devastating," with station boss Heidi Dawson saying in a statement, "Our thoughts are with John and his family at this incredibly difficult time and we will provide him with all the support we can."
"No words for what has happened to [John] and family today," fellow broadcaster Matt Chapman wrote in a post on X. "Impossible to comprehend the pain. Just know we are all here for you John. We love you pal - racing loves you."
Sky Sports Racing said the team was "deeply saddened by the tragic deaths" and offered their condolences.
