JEFF GUNTER: Israel proves the necessity of the second amendment

Israeli citizens are arming themselves against their would-be murderers and oppressors; we must protect the same right at home.

Israeli citizens are arming themselves against their would-be murderers and oppressors; we must protect the same right at home.

Amid the savage Hamas terror attacks, Israel recently took steps to loosen its strict gun restrictions. It is an important reminder that Israel’s right to self defense must extend to not just the state as a whole, but to its individual citizens as well.

The State of Israel was founded, from the ashes of the Holocaust, on democracy and strength. This deadly terror attack also reminds us of a vital and historic truth: weakness invites aggression and appeasement only emboldens our adversaries.

I have spent my entire life fighting for Israel. I have sat on the board of the RJC for over 15 years. I am the grandson of immigrants and my family was murdered in the Holocaust.

My resolute opinion - Gun ownership is essential and there are growing signs that this belief is gaining more and more support among the Israelis themselves. This harmonizes with the sentiments emanating from within Israel. Even months before this heinous terror attack, there were growing signs that innocent, law-abiding Israelis were eager to defend themselves in the face of violence.

The strength of our Second Amendment sadly could not be any more resonant than what happened in Israel. Gun rights for law abiding citizens are essential to preserving a free society. It is indeed heartening to observe that Israelis are now gearing up, arming themselves to counteract and deter these monster ISIS-like animals called Hamas.

Israel has no better ally than America, and America has no better ally than Israel. As a former Trump Ambassador in Iceland, I have firsthand experience on the importance of building strategic and long lasting international ties. And remember, beyond building our alliances we must ensure that we are properly holding our adversaries accountable.

It's why I am now running for United States Senate in Nevada. Because more than ever we need leaders who understand what's at stake and who understand and appreciate the success of Donald Trump’s foreign policy.

When I asked a former IDF officer about the historical significance of this attack, he responded:  “At first, we thought this was our 9/11. We now realize this is our Pearl Harbor. Just as Pearl Harbor transformed the trajectory for the United States, this attack is a watershed moment for Israel.”

Drawing a parallel to the American experience, Silver Prout, an American who happens to be a key member of my campaign, is currently trapped in the middle of this war zone. She highlights, “The Biden Administration’s lack of leadership on the world stage is palpable among many Israelis in the aftermath of this attack. It’s a sentiment I’ve encountered repeatedly, and now, I’m engulfed in its reality.”

Her experience provides a stark look into the conditions on the ground and growing frustration with the Biden Administration’s behavior so far. “Other nations like Iceland and Brazil have made it a priority to bring their citizens home. America needs to step up and do the same.”

We saw the Biden Administration abandon our fellow Americans and key allies in Afghanistan. Let us pray that the Biden Administration does not make this deadly mistake twice – but the signs thus far are not good.

This terror attack is a wake up call for Israel, for America and for the rest of the world. Individual gun rights reduce violence and improve safety and security.

Israel's trajectory over the past year, marked by increased terrorist activities and a stretched-thin military, underscores the necessity for the common citizen to be able to protect themselves. Whether in Afghanistan or now in Israel, Biden’s doctrine of managed decline is leaving us all less safe.

My promise to the people of Nevada – and to all Americans – as your next Senator, I will never surrender in the mission to protect your Second Amendment rights and your right of self defense, I will ensure security at the Southern border, I will stand with key allies like Israel. And most importantly, every action I take in Washington will be to improve the quality of life for you and your family.

In 2024, it’s all on the line, and the stakes could not be any higher.
