Sven Badzal, 22, was stabbed by the two drug dealers because the son dared "to go to Waitrose" on February 6, 2021. Waitrose is an employee-owned grocery chain in the UK.
The two perpetrators who have been convicted, Shiroh Ambersley, 22, and Rashid Gedel, 22, stabbed Badzak four times while beating up both him and his 16-year-old friend.
Bazdak and a friend were repeatedly stabbed by a group of six men when they were on their way to the store chain.
The mother, Jansa Badzak, pleaded with the UK Prime Minister at the time, Boris Johnson, to raise more awareness about knife violence in the city. She had said her son was merely going to get orange juice from the store the day of the attack.
At the time Jansa said, "He said he would get me some orange juice. I said we can get orange juice tomorrow, but he said he wanted to get it.”
The killers were members of the South Kilburn gang in London. Neither Badzak nor his friend were associated with any gang-related violence or crime. Badzak was an aspiring lawyer and was attending Wetherby and Portland Place schools for his education.
Judge John Dodd said of the killers, “They are young men who are both about to start very long prison terms.”
Badzak's friend had been stabbed in the back during the encounter but did not initially realize the damage that had been done. After the attack, he ran into a store screaming for help and was later treated for a collapsed lung.
Closed-circuit television cameras in London identified Gedel and Orchard at the scene, and Gedel reportedly boasted about the attack on social media after the fact.
Two others in the case, Harvey Canavan, 19, and Lior Agbayan were identified in the gang-style group. Canavan pleaded to manslaughter and Agbayan fled abroad.
The remaining two suspects have not been identified.
