The annual Met Gala was held last week at the Met Museum in New York City. The spectacle included many celebrities who were dressed in an over-the-top, Hunger Games-like fashion. This is arguably the largest fashion event of the year, showcasing some of the most opulent designs and the top A-List celebrities who are photographed going up the infamous steps of the Met.
This year, there was some controversy among the Hollywood elites about the theme of the Gala. This year’s Met Gala theme was “Karl Lagerfeld,” a beloved designer who has passed away, responsible for several classic Chanel designs. But Lagerfeld has been accused by the left of being misogynistic, sexist, and of course, racist.
Once the theme was announced, backlash followed from the celebrity and fashion community, with many calling Lagerfeld nothing more than a “fatphobic misogynist.” Of course, this is how celebrities often refer to their conservative fans as well.
These allegations mostly come from a comment Lagerfeld made in 2009 when he told a fashion magazine that, “no one wants to see curvy women.” Lagerfeld has made several comments that would be considered culturally conservative, such as his statement that he is not supportive of same-sex couples adopting children.
After the theme was announced last October, actress Jameela Jamil stated, “Those groups were women who were sexually assaulted, the entire ‘me-too’ movement, gay couples who wanted to adopt, all fat people, specifically fat women, and some of his greatest harm was against Muslim refugees, and the disgusting way he spoke about people fleeing their homes for fear of their lives.”
Some celebrities embraced the theme — like Doja Cat and Lil Nas X dressed up as Lagerfeld’s cat. Completely normal behavior.
Celebrities who are complaining about this year’s theme are putting their hypocrisy on full display. While these elites are criticizing Lagerfeld’s comments, they have no problem dressing up and honoring his fashion designs.
