Eight bodies were discovered in the Mexican resort of Cancun, one of the country’s most attractive tourist destinations, according to the New York Post. The remains were apparently discovered about ten miles from Cancun’s hotel and beach zone.
The bodies were discovered after the authorities had kicked off a collective search for missing people in sinkhole ponds and wooded lots, according to the authorities. Head prosecutor of the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo, Oscar Montes de Oca, said that five of the bodies had been uncovered at an abandoned construction site.
After the bodies were found, the state authorities posted on Facebook, pleading with people “not to publish and share on social networks false news that only damages the image of Quintana Roo.”
All five of the people uncovered were labeled as “missing” by the authorities before they were discovered.
CBS News reported that there are 112,000 people currently listed as “missing” in Mexico. Thus, the formulation of search groups to hunt for missing people has become common throughout the country. The outlet noted that it is unusual that these horrific events are now being carried out in Cancun, a highly sought-after area for tourists.
There were also three sets of skeletal remains that were discovered at a separate site in a wooded area in a poor neighborhood in Cancun, near the resort’s airport. None of the three remains have been identified. The authorities have also started carrying out similar searches in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, located approximately 140 miles from Cancun.
Following a slew of crimes committed in Mexico’s tourist areas, the US State Department has urged Americans to “exercise increased caution” when traveling to resorts such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum after dark.
The Guardian reported that there were two Canadians murdered in 2022 in Plata del Carmen, located about 40 miles just south of Cancun. And back in 2021, there was one American and one German who were killed when they were caught in the crossfire between rival drug gangs in Tulum.
