A top Chinese political advisor is suggesting that the country allow its single women to freeze their eggs, as the country faces its first population decline in over 60 years. This practice is currently banned in China, along with other fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization.

“Lu Weiying, a member of China's top political advisory body, told the state backed Global Times that she would also propose including infertility treatments in the public health insurance system at the upcoming Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which kicks off on March 4,” Reuters Reports.

Lu, who is a fertility doctor, told the times that her proposal will include a stipulation that women must be married in order to actually use their frozen eggs.

China’s National Bureau of Statistics recently revealed that in 2021, the population of mainland China dropped by 850,000. The birth rate dropped from 7.37 thousand to 6.77 thousand.

In Ocotober Xi Jinping pledged to address the population crisis and “improve the population development strategy.”

“[We will] establish a policy system to boost birth rates, and bring down the costs of pregnancy and childbirth, child-rearing, and schooling,” Xi said.

“We will pursue a proactive national strategy in response to population aging, develop elderly care programs and services, and provide better services for elderly people who live alone.”
