Ukraine on Wednesday declared a state of emergency as tensions with Russia continue to intensify, even mobilizing reservists in anticipation of war.
Some special restrictions announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zalensky will be set in place to keep the country calm and protect the economy as the Russian threat grows, Just the News reports.
Earlier this week, as previously reported by Human Events News, Putin recognized two Ukrainian breakaway territories as independent and began moving troops there.
In a statement Monday, the Kremlin said Putin in the “near future” will recognize the independence of the Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic regions in eastern Ukraine.
The state of emergency powers enacted Wednesday will allow local authorities to impose curfew restrictions, additional protection for public facilities, restrictions on traffic, and additional transport and document checks.. The imposed restrictions will last 30 days and can be extended another 30 days if needed.
Indeed, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry advised against travel to Russia and recommended anyone there leave immediately, saying Moscow’s “aggression” could lead to a significant reduction in consular services.
The head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council also called for a nationwide state of emergency Wednesday.
“The main aim of the Russian Federation is to destabilize Ukraine from inside and to achieve its objective. To prevent this from happening, we decided today and made this decision today,” Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, said. “These are all preventative measures, in order to preserve peace and calm in the country and for the economy to continue to work."
