Amazon temporarily suspended Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation from its charity platform for not disclosing where tens of millions of dollars in donations have gone.
AmazonSmile donates 0.5 percent of some purchases to a charity of the buyer’s choice, Just the News reports. According to its website, AmazonSmile has raised more than $300 million to support over 1 million charities.
A spokesperson for Amazon said that it “had to temporarily suspend” the foundation for failing to comply with financial disclosure laws.
Indeed, the group received more than $65 million in donations from nonprofit asset manager Thousand Currents in October of 2020, but failed to disclose what happened to the money or where it went.
“States have rules for nonprofits, and organizations participating in AmazonSmile need to meet those rules,” the Amazon spokesperson said. “Unfortunately this organization fell out of compliance with the rules in several states, so we’ve had to temporarily suspend them from the program until they come into compliance.”
