"Senators Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey offered the forecast today as five women's groups called for a filibuster, a parliamentary tactic to prevent Senate confirmation through endless debate.
"The groups, including the National Organization for Women, mounted the stop-Alito campaign because he refused at Senate Judiciary Committee hearings last week to say that the Supreme Court's 1973 decision legalizing abortion was 'settled law.' They also cited his 'hostility' to sex-discrimination lawsuits during 15 years as a federal appellate judge."
