How far left is San Francisco? Only one in five voters in that city voted for last week’s ballot initiative that would have required minors to wait 48 hours after notifying a parent before having an abortion. At that same time, 58% approved Measure H, banning ownership of handguns and prohibiting the buying, selling, distributing or manufacturing of any firearm or ammunition within the city.
If the measure were to go into effect, San Franciscans would be required to surrender all handguns to the police by April 1. The National Rifle Association has already sued to overturn the measure, and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom—who gained national notoriety when he flouted state law by marrying same-sex couples—conceded before he voted for the measure, “It clearly will be thrown out.”
