Yesterday I was reminded of how much I like Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft as I watched him on Fox News Sunday. It wasn't anything he said specifically that reminded me of my fondness for him, rather it was his overall demeanor.
The man does not have a mean, spiteful bone in his body. He obviously cares deeply about this nation and wants nothing less than to provide the best possible security for all Americans.
Of course, one wouldn't know that listening to Democrats, the media, and conspiracy theorists nationwide (even worldwide). They portray him as a rightwing nut with delusions of grandeur - a man who can only gain power by tapping everyone's telephones and making sure they are not violating his religious principles.
They could not be more wrong.
During my time working in the Senate, I had an opportunity to meet then-Sen. Ashcroft a few times. I was impressed with him from the first second. Also during my stint on the Hill, I was present for the circus-like hearings for Mr. Ashcroft's nomination to be U.S. Attorney General. In fact, the hearing room was just down the hall, and our office was used as a part of the headquarters for the fight to get him confirmed.
Anyhow, I was reminded of Ashcroft's integrity and abilities yesterday, and thought that I might share some information that could serve as a reminder of, or perhaps a primer on, the John Ashcroft that is not portrayed in the press and why it was he was nominated for and confirmed to the position of Attorney General.
